Rackspace Auto Scale is Here

Rackspace has finally joined the “Auto Scale” club! Unlike other players in the Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) Industry or commonly referred to as “Public Cloud” providers, Rackspace (RAX) had not provided automated scaling capabilities until now. On November 20th, 2013 RAX announced the unlimited availability of Rackspace Auto Scale; this is a free tool for all RAX customers that will enable you to grow and shrink your cloud dynamically.

Many of our customers today are using Public Cloud infrastructure to leverage the advantages of dynamic scaling – access to increased compute capacity when needed with the ability to disconnect from excess capacity when not needed. Amazon Web Service (AWS) has established itself as the 800 lb. Gorilla in the Public Cloud market segment as evidenced by their substantial separation from the rest of the competitors in the 2013 Gartner Magic Quadrant. In part, they have established this lead by bringing market-leading capabilities to the auto-scaling feature. Now RAX is in the game.

The RAX Auto Scale will allow you to create policy within its Cloud Control Panel, allowing customers to automatically add and delete compute capacity based on thresholds you set. The interface is as intuitive as you would expect given RAX’s commitment to user-friendly customer support as a differentiator in the market. You can quickly establish groups of servers, usually around common workloads such as Web Servers or Test and Dev Servers, then associate policies as part of Auto Scale Groups. This capability is very significant for RAX as it evolves its Public Cloud into the modern era. When combined with their well-regarded Fanatical Support and Managed Services capabilities they can be a viable alternative for the mid-sized enterprise that is looking to take advantage of a Public Cloud infrastructure with strong support operations.

We see customers that are increasingly looking at the agility and cost efficiencies that Public Cloud infrastructure offers:

  • For a Web Site that is used primarily Mon – Fri and very lightly on weekends, simply create an Auto Scale Group with a policy that automatically  reduces resources late Friday evening and brings them back on line early Monday morning
  • For an elastic Test cycle, simply create an Auto Scale Group that will bring on additional compute resources once a threshold is reached and scale back on a separately defined threshold
  • For Enterprise Applications that have usage spiked at End-of-Fiscal-Period intervals, simply… well you get the idea…

RAX has joined the Auto Scale club! Have you?
